ADOPTION
In many same-sex couples one party enters the relationship with a child. For whatever reason that child only has one parent. The other parent may be a sperm/egg donor, not known, deceased, or simply not interested in being in the child’s life. In these cases, the couple can decide to make the partner a legal parent through adoption. The adoption requires that the couple be either married or registered domestic partners. It also requires, in certain circumstances, the termination of parental rights for the biological parent who is not involved. This type of adoption is known as a stepparent adoption.
